Oral Piercings Aftercare Recommendations

There are multiple body piercing types nowadays and you may choose the one you really want to have or the most popular and matching your lifestyle. There are piercing types that can even change the way you look. Let's take, for example, eyebrow piercing. The placement of the eyebrow jewelry influences the outlook of the eyes and the expression of your face. It may look more aggressive and serious or funnier and vivid and the eyes can be made visually smaller or bigger. But the way your piercing looks isn't the most important. The health is far more important. And if you have decided to make certain piercing, you should be prepared for spending definite time taking care of it.

There are piercing types that heal fast and require only about 10-15 minutes a day for cleaning, but there are types of piercing that should be kept clean and you would have to spend at least half an hour a day to keep them healthy and clean.

Oral piercings that include tongue piercing, cheek piercing and piercing of the frenulum require special care. Below you'll find suggestions on aftercare that are recommended to follow but you should remember that the body of any person is different and the placement of piercing, environmental and outside factors, the process of procedure, the health of the body and the skin are the factors contributing to the healing process.

So, during healing of oral piercing you should drink plenty of water. To reduce the swelling you may gently sip iced water for 3-5 days after the piercing. After anything other than water is in your mouth, rinse with non-iodized sea salt solution (4 teaspoons of salt per 1 gallon of water). Wash your hands regularly, especially before checking barbell balls for tightness. Use new toothbrush and gently brush exposed portions of the jewelry (accessory ends and crevices) to avoid plaque build-up. You may use special cleaning and healing mouthwash twice or three times a day. If you have any questions, concerns or problems, contact your doctor or your piercer. You shouldn't use gly-oxide, Listerine and other alcohol or harsh based mouthwashes. Don't touch piercing without washing the hands. You should avoid open mouthed kissing and oral sex during healing period. Avoid hot or spicy foods and don't rotate the jewelry during healing period.

Choose body piercing jewelry made from the material fitting your body and recommended for starter jewelry. Surgical stainless steel, titanium and PTFE / Bioplast are the best materials for new piercings (of course, it depends on your skin and its reaction to certain metals). And don't forget to take care of your jewelry when you change it.
